Are you looking for a career opportunity where you can complete a degree level apprenticeship in Civil Engineering?

If you’d like to gain a degree, without the debt, we are looking for a Civil Engineering Degree Apprentice to undertake this amazing opportunity to develop into a professional career.

How you’ll make a difference

Working in the Structures team in the Place Design and Operations (StreetCare) division you will be involved with the asset management of bridges and other highway structures that are essential to the highway network working efficiently. The team play a key lead role on major schemes in South Gloucestershire. The team work with other Local Authorities and partners across the West of England.

As our apprentice, you will contribute to the inspection, assessment and maintenance of our bridges and structures as well as supporting the team in carrying out the design of new structures and the design of strengthening existing structures. As we work in multi-discipline teams to deliver projects, you will learn and gain knowledge of a number of engineering disciplines to gain practical experience using the latest applications and technologies. You will develop skills, competencies and experience required to gain a professional qualification.

This is a practical role within the organisation, with a good balance between training and support, autonomy and flexibility.

Over the 5 year apprenticeship, you will be taught at UWE and will learn key engineering concepts, alongside vital professional skills in management, creative skills in design of civil and structural engineering and systems, practical skills in surveying, geographical information systems (GIS) and computer-aided design (CAD). You will have commitment to meet requirements of the professional training and ensure that all reporting and training documents are completed on time and to the quality standards agreed.

On successful completion, you will gain a BEng (Hons) Civil Engineering degree and will be working towards the Incorporated Engineer professional qualification.

You will get the opportunity to:

  • Carry out inspection of bridges and highway structures to national standards
  • Undertake the design, programming and implementation of engineering projects and schemes.
  • Preparation of drawings, calculations, specifications, documents, consultation and publicity material, and scheme cost estimates.
  • Arranging and supervising the implementation of schemes, including liaison with contractors and consultants, site supervision, survey and setting out work, and monitoring of scheme expenditure.
  • Preparing reports and responding to enquiries and correspondence from MPs, Council Members, Parish Councils, other organisations, and the general public.

We will allocate you a workplace mentor to give you guidance and support throughout your Level 6 Civil Engineering Degree apprenticeship. You will also have the support of an assessor from UWE throughout your programme.

Things we need you to know:

The salary for this apprenticeship is Hay Grade 11: £21,575.

You will be based at the Broad Lane Depot, Engine Common Lane in Yate.

The Civil Engineer Degree Apprenticeship has been developed alongside leading employers to provide the professional engineering skills needed in the sector.

The apprenticeship runs as part-time day release over five years, with two additional block weeks. The day release training will run at UWE, Coldharbour Lane, Frenchay. When you are not attending UWE, the rest of your time will be spent with us learning on the job.

Please note that you will be expected to undertake a basic skills assessment as part of the selection process and all candidates that successfully reach the interview stage will be required to provide a 10 minute presentation as part of the interview process. Candidates who do not provide a presentation at interview will not proceed through the recruitment process.

Please note candidates will need to meet the eligibility criteria for starting the apprenticeship.

In addition to your workplace mentor, you will also be allocated an assessor by UWE, who will come to visit you at work to complete reviews. These reviews are simply to make sure you are on track and happy.

You’ll be completing a Level 6 Civil Engineering Degree apprenticeship standard which will provide you with a highly transferable set of knowledge, skills and behaviours, which you gain by working for us.

This apprenticeship also requires you to complete an end point assessment which will see you demonstrate what you have learned as an apprentice and how it can be applied in any other organisation. This will be another chance for you to shine!

The end point assessment consists of a project, interview, written report, written examination and presentation. We and your assessor will give you plenty of support and encouragement to ensure you are prepared and confident to complete this stage. We also have plenty of apprentices here that can give you tips and help ease any nerves or concerns, because they have done it themselves!

What we need from you


  • You must hold a minimum qualification in GCSE English and Maths at grade C or 4/5 and above.
  • You will have a minimum of 2 A-level’s with one in Mathematics at Grade C or above or a Level 3 BTEC in Construction and the Built Environment.
  • You will have good attention to detail and ability to produce accurate, error free work.
  • Have excellent communication skills and be able to work as part of a team contributing to effective service delivery.
  • You will have effective IT and numeracy skills including the ability to accurately update information systems and databases.
  • Be able to prioritise workloads to meet deadlines according to demand.

Desirable

  • Level 4 HNC in a Civil Engineering discipline.
