Full time starting salary is normally in the range £33,348 to £43,155 with potential progression once in post to £45,737

Background

We are seeking to recruit a registered nurse (adult, mental health and/or child) to contribute to supporting the University of Birmingham (UoB), School of Nursing and Midwifery (SoN&M) expanded undergraduate and postgraduate pre-registration nursing portfolios. You will join a team who are working to ensure our students continue to receive excellent clinical skills and simulation based learning.

The School offers a range of routes leading to registration including a three-year Bachelor of Nursing, a four-year Master of Nursing (single as well dual field qualification) and a two-year postgraduate MSc programme. The school also offers a range of programmes aimed at qualified practitioners including Advanced Clinical Practice and independent prescribing and will soon be delivering a MSc Midwifery (RN to RM).

The post holders will support the delivery, design, evaluation and assessment of the undergraduate and post graduate clinical skills and simulated practice teaching and will work together with academic and professional services colleagues to develop online learning resources and assessments to support skill enhancement and simulation based learning. If new to higher education successful applicants will be encouraged to pursue a post graduate qualification in higher education.

They will work closely with the nursing and midwifery and advanced clinical practice programme directors, lead for simulation based learning, academic staff, and the Head of Education to optimise the design, delivery and assessment of programme outcomes. Post holders will be accountable to the Head of School of Nursing And Midwifery.

Role Summary

  • Contribute to all teaching and learning particularly clinical skills and simulated practice across all nursing and advanced practice programmes (under the supervision of an academic member of staff)
  • Demonstrate professional integrity acting as role model for evidence-based, inclusive, person-centred simulated clinical practice so learners can mirror accountability, professional values, and appropriate delegation
  • Work with learners to develop clinical skills integrating theory to practice, developing understanding of safety and risk minimisation and effective person-centred communication
  • Provide high quality learning and teaching activities, materials and presentations based on sound educational principles
  • Engage in student assessment, evaluating educational activity and maintaining safe learning environment

Main Duties

  • Teach courses at a range of levels to undergraduates, postgraduates and CPD students, predominantly through practical demonstration and simulation, and if required formal lectures and seminars, so that the School’s learning objectives are met.
  • Contribute to the design of content, modules and operationalisation of curricula with other colleagues.
  • Plan and prepare own teaching, including guidance notes and handouts in accordance with the established objectives of the programme and University best practice.
  • Devise and supervise projects, student dissertations and skills/simulated clinical learning
  • Develop an approach to planning, reviewing and evaluating own teaching.
  • Undertake full range of responsibilities in relation to providing formative and summative feedback, supervision, marking and examining. (This will include assessed work contributing to the final award – as a mark or as a credit – such as objective structured clinical examinations [OSCEs]).
  • Promote equality and value diversity acting as a role model in the simulated and classroom context fostering an inclusive working and learning culture.
  • Frequently update own subject expertise.
  • Undertake personal professional development in teaching and learning, including self-reflection on own teaching, using student and peer review feedback, to enhance own teaching and learning practice.
  • Undertake management/administration activities arising from the planning, delivery and assessment of learning.
  • Contribute to Departmental/School teaching-related activities and teaching-related administration.
  • Contribute to knowledge transfer, enterprise, business development and/or public engagement activities that has of manifest benefit to the College and the University, often under supervision of a project leader.

Person Specification

  • Bachelor degree in a healthcare or cognate discipline
  • Registered Nurse (RN) child, adult or mental health field or dual qualified with the Nursing and Midwifery Council
  • Evidence of interest in the use of high fidelity simulation based learning and support the development of others to optimise learning through simulation based learning
  • A Higher degree relevant to healthcare or cognate disciplines, research or teaching or equivalent qualifications is preferred
  • Hold or willingness to undertake qualification in Higher Education/Fellowship Higher Education Academy
  • High level analytical capability
  • Evidence of recent clinical practice and/or contemporary evidence based clinical skills competence
  • Ability to design and deliver evidence based teaching and learning materials and simulation based learning
  • Ability to assess and organise resources effectively
  • Understanding of and ability to contribute to broader management/administration/assessment/evaluation processes associated with learning and teaching in higher education
  • Knowledge of the protected characteristics of the Equality Act 2010, and how to actively ensure in day to day activity in own area that those with protected characteristics are treated equally and fairly.
