The Role
The Cathedral is looking to recruit a part time Security Officer to become an integral part of the Estates and Facilities team. The role is to provide Sunday and holiday cover and you report directly to the Security Supervisor who will discuss the daily and weekly schedules and priorities with you. The primary objective for the Security Officer is to execute duties that are designed to create and sustain a safe and secure environment for staff, volunteers and all visitors to the Cathedral and its Precincts, at the same time protecting our assets from damage, misuse or theft. The role is public-facing and the Security Officer represents the Cathedral, so their conduct, manner and behaviour should at all times reflect this, ensuring that visitors are made to feel very welcome. Creating a positive visitor experience is of great importance.
Skills Required
We are ideally seeking someone with asset protection experience, or who has experience of operating successfully in public spaces where there is a degree of risk. The Security Officer works with both paid and volunteer members of staff in undertaking their duties, in particular working alongside:
- Members of the Clergy and Lay members
- Shop Manager and Assistants
Main Duties:
· Unlocking and Locking the grounds and the Cathedral in the to the agreed standard.
· Making sure all designated emergency exits are open and free from obstruction at all times when the Cathedral is open to the public.
· Patrolling the Precincts, checking for unusual activity or antisocial behaviour and taking appropriate action when required.
· Maintaining a visible presence during events where footfall is high.
· Helping deliver a first-class visitor experience.
· Facilitating the pastoral care of vulnerable adults seeking help.
· Reacting to any calls for assistance either inside the Cathedral or on our property, assessing the severity of the issue and seeking external support from emergency services if required.
We are a small dynamic team so you may also be called upon to assist in:
- Preparation for services in the Cathedral including chairing and furniture preparation for concerts and award ceremonies.
- You may be required to undertake other tasks as necessary for the smooth running of the Cathedral, as directed by the Chapter through the Executive.
Essential Skills
- Exceptional communication skills. It is critical that the Security Guard can be clearly understood across the short-wave radios in use across the Precincts.
- Outstanding negotiation skills and the ability to de-escalate and diffuse potentially volatile situations by demonstrating calm assertive behaviour, with the appropriate verbal and non-verbal techniques.
- An organised and methodical approach to routine, with attention to detail.
- An understanding of the principles of delivering an exceptional visitor experience.
- Physically fit and able to spend long periods of the day on foot.
Minimum Requirements:
· 5 GCSE’s including English and Maths.
· Experience of working on in security or a closely related industry.
· Ideally has a Security Industry Authority (SIA) Door Supervision Licence.
· Able to use IT equipment and be computer literate using Word and Excel.
· Be aware of SIA standards and regulations.
· Able to work in all weathers.

- A salary £ 5460 (= £10.50 p.h.)
- 10 hours per week on a rota basis, flexible around seasonal changes and the Cathedral’s programme. Core Sunday working hours will typically be between 07:00 and 17:30, with some late evening working and additional hours on occasions. Membership of the Cathedral’s pension scheme after completion of the probationary period.
- 25 days holiday per annum pro rata, plus 8 public holidays
- Free on-site parking
- This is a permanent post, subject to satisfactory probationary period
