Job Description
As a Specialist Biomedical Scientist/ Trainee Specialist BMS in Pathology the post holder is responsible for the delegated tasks required for the delivery of a fit-for-purpose medical laboratory service analysing and reporting on, blood and other body materials to achieve the objectives of efficient and effective patient care, and effective resource management within the hospital. Trainee Band 6 candidate can also be considered and supported to archive completion of the specialist portfolio.
Applications are invited from suitable candidates interested in joining our excellent team within the Haematology and Blood Transfusion Department of Coventry and Warwickshire Pathology Services (CWPS). As a Network we are very forward thinking and innovative, and are currently part way through a major reconfiguration project. This will see development of a Hub Laboratory at George Eliot Hospital in Nuneaton, supported by Essential Service Laboratories and Specialist Services at Coventry and Warwick Laboratories.
We operate a 24/7 service and staff are expected to support the out of hours service under Agenda for Change terms and conditions.
We are looking for someone who is keen to join the friendly and professional laboratory team as a band 6 BMS. The successful candidate will be expected to have technical knowledge commensurate with this grade but also be able to maintain and progress quality initiatives with a flexible and innovative approach. We are looking for people who work well within a team and have a patient focused approach at this exciting time. Good NHS experience of staff management is essential.
The Haematology and Blood Transfusion Department is undergoing a major reconfiguration of services with the implementation of Siemens equipment across CWPS network. The IT systems used within CWPS are Cirdan Ultra LIMS and QPulse quality management software.
Consideration may be given to candidates who are close to completion of Specialist Diploma or who want to start the process of completing one.
You will be expected to maintain the required professional standards and an up-to-date knowledge of Biochemistry and Immunology and current working practices. Working as part of the team, you will contribute to provision and further development of a high quality diagnostic service. 1. Technical
a. Daily perform routine and specialised diagnostic services on patient or environmental samples containing potentially infectious material.
b. To carry out routine maintenance on analytical equipment as required and in accordance with standard operating procedures.
c. To carry out equipment and method troubleshooting, advise the Section Manager of situations requiring further action, work with service engineers on fault resolution.
d. To prepare, store and use reagents required for laboratory investigations.
e. To perform manual, semi-automated and fully-automated laboratory investigations to exacting medical and scientific standards according to Standard Operating Procedures.
f. Interpretation of diagnostic investigations and be responsible for the validity of results and ensure accuracy and precision as specified by laboratory protocols and procedures
g. To report to the Section Manager any instance or event which may cause a service delivery failure, but be fully involved in the resolution of such events.
h. To develop and investigate new techniques or analysers as required by the changing needs of the service.
i. To ensure that all results are reported within the agreed turnaround time and to take remedial action, for example communicating appropriately with colleagues and managers.
j. Work to meet laboratory performance targets as directed by senior staff.
k. To use departmental resources efficiently and ensure reagents and consumables are ordered when approaching minimum stock levels.
l. To participate in the review and update of Standard Operating Procedures and health and safety documentation including COSHH and workplace risk assessments by commenting or proposing changes.
2. Clinical
a. To interpret first line laboratory results and take appropriate actions in line with laboratory policies and procedures, including:
i) Authorisation of results
ii) Ordering relevant follow up laboratory procedures
iii) Adding technical and approved pre-defined clinically relevant comments
iv) Referring results for expert opinion or clinical interpretation
v) Informing the requestor of a clinically significant result.
b. Give technical information to other service users such as reference ranges, appropriate specimens/sampling and turn around times.
c. To participate in clinical audits.
3. Quality
a. To measure and monitor the accuracy and imprecision of laboratory investigations using appropriate quality control procedures.
b. Act appropriately in the event of a technical/analytical non-conformity and appropriately inform the Section Manager. Decide with appropriate liaison with senior staff the subsequent level of investigation and reporting.
c. Participate in external and internal quality assurance schemes and vertical and horizontal audits as directed by senior staff.
d. To ensure that records are kept up to date and stored safely to ensure compliance the ISO15189 standard.
e. Promote a culture of quality throughout the laboratory.
4. Laboratory I.T
a. To maintain confidentiality, security and integrity of information relating to patients, staff and other Health Service business.
b. Accurate and timely entry of data onto the laboratory computer system and/or automated analysers using a VDU and keyboard workstation.
5. Training and Development
a. To Support and participate in staff training and development
b. To deliver training and supervision of Trainee BMS, support staff and other relevant staff or visitors as directed by senior staff.
c. To participate in continual professional development to maintain high standards of knowledge and skills.
d. To participate in and perform personal development reviews and work to agreed set objectives.
e. Delegate appropriately.
6. General
a. To comply with the policies and procedures of University Hospitals Coventry and Warwickshire NHS Trust.
b. To observe and adhere to local and national health and safety policies.
c. To keep the workplace and workbenches clean and tidy.
d. To maintain good working relations with all members of staff and promote effective teamwork.
